Jazzwise Magazine UK. September 2023. Formed in 2022 and led by three of Canada’s most acclaimed and accomplished jazz treasures-- saxophonist Kirk MacDonald, guitarist Lorne Lofsky and trumpeter Derrick Gardner, the Canadian Jazz Collective( CJC) takes a collaborative approach to the presentation of original Canadian jazz. Augmented by clarinetist Virginia MacDonald and supported by a noted rhythm section comprised of pianist Brian Dickinson, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Bernd Reiter, this innovative, intergenerational Septet takes a collaborative approach to presenting original Canadian jazz, blending the unique artistic visions of the leaders into one powerful, creative, and cohesive voice. In less than two years, the CJC has presented twenty-seven performances in three highly successful sold-out, standing room only tours in Canada and Europe, dazzling audiences everywhere. Their debut album Septology- The Black Forest Session, recorded in Germany and released on HGBS Blue Records in 2023, has recently been nominated for the 2024 JUNO Awards - Jazz Album of the Year (Group). The CJC’s second album, Live at Le Vauban, recorded live in concert at Brest, France in late May of 2023, has just been released in Europe and North America. “One of those amalgams whose combined talents are even greater than the sum of their parts”, the CJC’s March 2024 tour in Canada and US includes performances at prestigious venues such as the Izzy Asper Jazz Series in Winnipeg, a collection of midwestern American universities, and the iconic Birdland Jazz Club in New York City.
