Playing a 1901 Steinway at C-mac's work event honoring Buffalo hometown actor, William Fichtner.3/6/2016 University at Buffalo Department of Music Jazz Ensemble performs at The Egg in Albany, NY for the Governor's MLK Celebration, under the direction of George Caldwell, performing two celebratory pieces entitled "United" by Wayne Shorter and "The Melting Pot" by Derrick Gardner. The jazz band received a "rock star" ovation from a sober and happy audience. And, get this, the production crew thanked the young musicians for being so professional. Musicians: Jake Schoelles (trumpet), Alexandra McArthur (baritone sax), Jon Lehning (alto sax), Alec Dube (vibes), Aravinth Mathuranayagam (drums), Miles Neretin (bass) and Chris Diaz(trombone) "For 'Side B,' the excellent pianist George Caldwell joins the dancers onstage to play a jazz fantasia on themes from Coltrane’s beyond-classic album 'A Love Supreme.' “...'Side B' has more developed choreographic content, but against Mr. Caldwell’s clearer musical structure, the poverty of the danced response is set into greater relief. The performers run around and around. They reach and reach, but they have no vocabulary to match Mr. Caldwell’s, much less to approach Coltrane’s, and their feigned ecstasy at the end is nowhere near earned."http://www.tallahassee.com/story/entertainment/2015/09/24/urban-bush-women-channels-jazz-genius-trane/72748912/ "It will be performed to live music composed by the Grammy Award-winning George Caldwell." Kyle Kohler, Danny Mixon and myself - keys to the city! from the Pine Grill Jazz Reunion. Kyle and I met that night and Danny Mixon and I go back to when I lived in New York. Glad they made it to Buffalo and those who heard them know why! Two bad cats! Kyle played organ with Bill Easley (speaking of bad cats!) and Buffalo's own Carmen Intorre and Greg Millar. Kyle is a baaaaad, swinging player. Danny played with the great Calvin Newborne and Buffalo's own Juini Booth. I first heard Danny in a club in Harlem back in the day, got my socks knocked off and then I knew why he was Frank Foster's favorite piano player. Bill, I know from Memphis, although he's from Olean. He's a woodwind master who is on the first-call list of a who's-who in jazz: George Benson, Joey DeFrancesco, Nicholas Payton, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, etc, etc. He's been a friend and mentor since Memphis. Yea, Buffalo got it going' on ...(July 2015) "By day, the Buffalo State Theater alumna is the Director of Communications and Community Engagement for the Buffalo History Museum, and never wastes an opportunity to spread good will for that venerable institution. She is also known for her enduring beauty, her spectacular vegetable garden, and her blissful marriage to jazz musician George Caldwell. As Mrs. Robinson, Connie gives a deliciously restrained performance, grounded in a perfect foundation of dry and cynical humor. Alleyway’s production of The Graduate, directed by Todd Warfield, has imbued the story with an element of giddy effervescence—the secondary characters are played as delightfully silly cartoons who whirl around the dilemma of Benjamin, a young man whose interaction with a predatory older woman will alter the course of his life." more |
